Drum smokers are known for their efficiency, flavor production, and simplicity. With Big Poppa Smokers’ Drum Kit, you’re not guessing—you’re building a smoker based on a system that’s won championships and cooked thousands of incredible meals.
What Is a Drum Smoker?
A drum smoker—often called a UDS (Ugly Drum Smoker)—is a vertical charcoal smoker built from a steel barrel. Its design creates a natural convection flow, pulling heat and smoke upward across the meat for even cooking and deep smoke flavor.
What makes drum smokers so popular is their balance of:
- Fuel efficiency
- Stable low-and-slow temperatures
- Simple airflow control
- Outstanding flavor
Big Poppa Smokers didn’t just jump on the drum smoker trend—they helped define it.

How to Build Your Own Barrel Smoker (Step-by-Step Overview)
Building a drum smoker with Big Poppa’s Drum Kit is straightforward, even if you’re not a seasoned DIY expert.
Step 1: Source the Right Drum
Start with a food-grade, unlined 55-gallon steel drum. Avoid drums with chemical liners unless you plan to remove them properly.
Step 2: Install the Air Intakes
Using the pre-measured locations from Big Poppa’s instructions, install the stainless steel intake pipes. These control airflow—and ultimately your cooking temperature.
Step 3: Add the Charcoal Basket
The charcoal basket sits near the bottom of the drum, providing consistent heat and allowing ash to fall away from the fire.
Step 4: Mount the Cooking Grate
Set your cooking grate height based on the type of cooks you plan to do—low and slow BBQ or hotter, faster cooks.
Step 5: Season and Fire It Up
Before your first cook, run a seasoning burn using charcoal and a light coating of oil to protect the metal and eliminate residue.
Why Drum Smokers Excel at Low-and-Slow BBQ
Drum smokers shine when cooking classics like brisket, pork butt, ribs, and chicken. The vertical design keeps moisture in the cooking chamber while delivering clean, efficient smoke.
Pair your drum smoker with Big Poppa Smokers’ award-winning rubs like Sweet Money, Cash Cow, or Double Secret to dial in competition-level flavor.

Hi, could you tell me the size of the smoker handles, I’m looking for one for my smoker.
Do the two ends that screw to the smoker bend slightly downward, so as to fit on a round drum smoker.
Kind Regards
